Playing out in the most unpredictable manner, Francis Ngannou would retain his UFC heavyweight championship through top control in the latter rounds of the fight.
With the opening two rounds seeing Gane keep the distance and essentially coast while evading Ngannou’s famed power, the fight would flip on its head early in the third as the champion capitalized on a caught kick and landed a big takedown slam.
After establishing top control, Ngannou’s size would markedly show itself as Gane struggled to regain his base and the fourth would again see Ngannou look to the mat as two more takedowns put another round in the bag for ‘The Predator’.
With the final round looking to be decisive, Gane would secure a takedown of his own but a poor choice of attempting a heel hook and kneebar would see a reversal of position and Ngannou riding out the remainder of the fight on top to secure a unanimous decision win.
Meanwhile in the second title fight of UFC 270, Deiveson Figueiredo would regain the flyweight throne after edging out Brandon Moreno in a closely fought five-round fight.
As both men landed at a high clip throughout the bout, a big overhand right by the Brazilian in the final moments of the third round seemingly swung the momentum in his favour.
With the scores now tied 1-1-1 over their trilogy, Figueiredo would call for a final decider between the two.
