Two rivalries are set to come to a head in championship bouts come March 5th.

As first reported by ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, UFC 272 will feature two title fights as Alexander Volkanovski will defend his featherweight belt against Max Holloway in the third meeting between the two while Aljamain Sterling and Petr Yan will compete in a bid to unify their bantamweight championships.

Volkanovski (23-1) has been the 145 lbs champion since 2019 after taking the title from Max Holloway via unanimous decision. Volkanovski would then defeat Holloway once again in an immediate rematch before most recently recording his third overall title defence against Brian Ortega at UFC UFC 266 in September 2021. The 33-year old has won his last 20 inside of the cage with his lone career defeat coming in 2013.

Holloway (23-6) meanwhile has recorded two straight unanimous decision victories since suffering his second defeat to Volkanovski. The self-proclaimed ‘best boxer in the UFC’ has earned ‘Fight of the Night’ honours in his last two performances and holds wins over the likes of Frankie Edgar, Jose Aldo (x2) and current lightweight champion Charles Oliveira.

In the second title fight booked for UFC 272, Sterling (20-3) will look for a more definitive victory over Petr Yan after winning their first clash for the bantamweight title via disqualification. After being on the receiving end of a flush illegal knee, Sterling would gain the 135 lbs title after previously putting together an impressive five-fight winning streak over the likes of Jimmie Rivera, Pedro Munhoz and Cory Sandhagen.

Yan (16-2) will look to reclaim his championship meanwhile after picking up an interim bantamweight title following Sterling’s absence from competition due to undergoing surgery on his neck. Yan would earn the title after securing a unanimous decision win over Sandhagen at UFC 267 to record his eighth promotional win.
