A welterweight title eliminator is scheduled for UFC 264 per UFC president Dana White.
Revealing the fight news to ESPN, the current #2 and #5 ranked contenders Gilbert Burns and Stephen Thompson respectively, are set to meet at UFC 264 on July 10th.
UFC 264 is expected to be headlined by a lightweight clash between Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor.
Burns (19-4) will enter the 170 lbs contest coming off of a failed title bid against former Sanford MMA stablemate Kamaru Usman in February. The third-round TKO loss to Usman in the main event of UFC 258 brought an end to a six-fight winning streak for the Brazilian and was also his first defeat since moving up to the welterweight division in 2019.
Thompson (16-4-1) meanwhile is currently riding a two-fight winning streak after suffering back-to-back losses in main event bouts. After a shocking KO loss to Anthony Pettis in 2019, Thompson has defeated both Vicente Luque and Geoff Neal via unanimous decision.
