Much like last weeks event, UFC Fight Night 177 over-delivered from an underwhelming card as the headline bout between Michelle Waterson and Angela Hill produced one fo the fights of the year.
Bumped up to the main event billing on short notice, Waterson and Hill battled back-and-forth over 25 minutes at an electric pace. Ultimately, ‘The Karate Hottie’ would get her hand raised somewhat controversially via split decision but Hill’s performance will surely keep her stock high in the strawweight division.
Elsewhere on Saturday night’s fight card, Ottman Azaitar continued his unbeaten record with another display of his thumping power against Khama Worthy, Ed Herman snatched a third-round submission on Mike Rodriguez after a dodgy referee decision in the second while veteran Kevin Croom made a remarkable start to his UFC career with an underdog win over Roosevelt Roberts.
With an absolutely stacked event set for this upcoming Saturday, the UFC matchmakers will have to quickly pencil in some fights for the big winners of UFC Fight Night 177. Fortunately, ReadMMA has curated five fights to make:
Michelle Waterson vs. Tatiana Suarez
Waterson returned to the win column with her split decision victory, but the quality of her five-round contest against Angela Hill is probably more of a boost to her standings than anything else.
Going forward, a fight with Tatiana Suarez would make for an interesting stylistic match-up as long as Suarez has recovered from her reoccurring injuries.
Ottman Azaitar vs. Rafael Fiziev
Azaitar’s power is perhaps amongst the best in the lightweight division and his unbeaten record will help him raise his profile in a stacked division.
While there are a ton of options at 155 lbs, a fight with Rafael Fiziev would pit two rising stars against one another all but guaranteeing a huge boost to the winner and an excellent fight too.
Roxanne Modafferi vs. Robertson / Botelho Winner
Picking up a narrow win over a game Andrea Lee, Roxanne Modafferi is more than likely in a gatekeeping role in the flyweight division.
A true OG of the women’s MMA scene, Modafferi should be matched with the next generation of contenders and with Gillian Robertson set to take on Poliana Botelho next month, the winner would make sense for ‘The Happy Warrior’s’ next bout.
Bobby Green vs. Gregor Gillespie
Bobby Green has gone from strength to strength during the pandemic as three wins in quick succession have shown the veteran put it all together.
With a fun fighting style and the experience behind him, Green deserves a decent name at the higher end of 155 lbs and a fight with a returning Gregor Gillespie would offer that chance.
Billy Quarantillo vs. Alex Caceres
Landing a thumping right-hand seconds into the third round, Billy Quarantillo is now 3-0 in the UFC’s featherweight division since joining the promotion through Dana White’s Contender Series.
With a growing resume of impressive wins, Quarantillo could be a decent player at 145 lbs but a test against an experienced UFC fighter like Alex Caceres would be a great match-up.
