A high-ranking strawweight match-up has been made official for May.
Announced by the UFC on Wednesday, the current #6 ranked contender Claudia Gadelha will take on the #9 ranked Marina Rodriguez at UFC Fight Night 172 in Oklahoma City on May 2nd.
Gadelha (17-4) had been expected to compete at UFC 246 in January but after a failed weigh-in attempt by her prospective opponent, Alexa Grasso, the bout was cancelled by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. ‘Claudinha’ has exchanged wins and losses in her last four fights, most recently picking up a unanimous decision win against Randa Markos at UFC 239. Gadelha is also a former UFC title challenger, losing her lone championship attempt against Joanna Jedrzejczyk in 2016.
Rodriguez (12-0-2) meanwhile has gone undefeated throughout her professional career. Since joining the UFC in 2018, Rodriguez has won two unanimous decisions against Tecia Torres and Jessica Aguilar as well as two majority draws. Rodriguez last competed at UFC on ESPN 7 where she drew against Cynthia Calvillo.
