A high-ranking heavyweight clash has been added to the UFC’s Abu Dhabi show in September.
Confirmed by Curtis Blaydes through his Instagram account, Blaydes will take on Shamil Abdurakhuimov on September 7th at UFC 242, the UFC’s first show in the United Arab Emirates since 2014.
Blaydes (11-2, 1 NC) most recently bounced back into the win column at UFC Fight Night 148 in March as he earned a dominant unanimous decision win against Justin Willis. The current #4 ranked heavyweight has gone 6-2 with one no contest during his UFC tenure with both of losses coming at the hands of Francis Ngannou. Despite his short career however, the 28-year old holds notable wins over the likes of Aleksei Oleinik, Mark Hunt and Alistair Overeem.
Abdurakhimov (20-4) meanwhile is on a three-fight win streak having defeated Chase Sherman, Andrei Arlovski and Marcin Tybura. The 37-year-old is currently ranked as the #10 contender in the UFC’s heavyweight division.
UFC 242 is now expected to feature:
- Khabib Nurmagomedov (c) vs. Dustin Poirier (i.c) – lightweight unification title fight
- Curtis Blaydes vs. Shamil Abdurakhimov
- Belal Muhammad vs. Takashi Sato
- Teemu Packalen vs. Ottman Azaitar
- Khalid Taha vs. Bruno Silva
