Bellator has its second double champion in Patricio ‘Pitbull’ Freire – but the result didn’t come without some controversy.
After dropping Chandler early in the first round with a punch behind the ear, Pitbull swarmed the defending champion on the mat unleashing a flurry of punches. As Chandler turtled over however, and on replays he may have briefly gone out, the referee intervened just as Chandler began to stand up.
Despite the somewhat controversial nature of the result, Freire is now on a four-fight winning streak and extended his promotional record for wins and stoppage victories.
Meanwhile in the co-main event, Douglas Lima advanced to the final of Bellator’s welterweight grand prix as he landed a brutal knockout on Michael ‘Venom’ Page. With a dominant first round already in the bag down to Page’s stalling on the mat, Lima sparked into life in the second as ‘MVP’ landed his first meaningful strike.
Looking to follow up on his rare success with pressure, a leg kick knocked the British fighter to the mat as he advanced only for a huge uppercut to render him unconscious moments later.
