Bellator’s welterweight grand prix ends its first-round on Saturday night as their 170 lbs champion Rory MacDonald begins his attempt to run the gauntlet against veteran Jon Fitch.
MacDonald (20-5) is returning to the welterweight division after suffering a dominant loss to middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi in his last outing and will be looking to make the first defence of his championship since winning the belt to grand prix semi-finalist Douglas Lima last year.
Fitch (31-7-1, 1 NC) meanwhile is riding high heading into Bellator 220 as the 41-year old is currently on a five-fight winning streak. Fitch will also be looking to add to his trophy cabinet after claiming the WSOF – later the PFL – welterweight championship in 2016.
In addition to the headlining welterweight title fight, Bellator 220 will also see the flyweight title being contested for as rising star Ilima-Lei Macfarlane (9-0) defends her championship gold against Veta Arteaga (5-2).
The California event’s main card will also see former UFC champion Benson Henderson (26-8) take on Adam Piccolotti (11-2) in the lightweight division, former Bellator light heavyweight champions Phil Davis (19-5, 1 NC) and Liam McGeary (13-3) face off against one another and explosive prospect Gaston Bolanos (4-1) take on Nathan Stolen (7-4).
