Reports: Al Iaquinta vs. Donald Cerrone slated for May main event
With both parties verbally agreeing to fight, top lightweight contenders Al Iaquinta and Donald Cerrone are set for a five-round main event in May.
As reported by ESPN via multiple sources, the #4 ranked Iaquinta will meet the #9 ranked Cerrone at UFC Fight Night 150 in Ottawa, Canada on May 4th.
Cerrone (35-11, 1 NC) most recently defeated rising prospect Alexander Hernandez in his return to the lightweight limit via second-round TKO in January of this year. With a successful second-bow at 155 lbs, ‘Cowboy’ had been tipped as a potential opponent for Conor McGregor but with the Irishman still suspended for his role in the post-fight brawl at UFC 229, the promotion have gone in a different direction for the 47-fight veteran.
Iaquinta (14-4-1) meanwhile will enter the May bout on the biggest win of his career after defeating former interim title challenger Kevin Lee for the second time. ‘Ragin’ Al’ earned a unanimous decision over Lee in a five-round fight last December and has now gone 6-1 in his last seven fights. Iaquinta’s only loss in that time came against Khabib Nurmagomedov via unanimous decision after accepting a title fight with the Russian on one day’s notice.
