Three important fights in the women’s flyweight and strawweight divisions have been added to UFC 238, including a first flyweight title defence for Valentina Shevchenko.
Confirmed this morning by the UFC itself, Valentina Shevchenko is set to defend her 125 lbs title against the #1 ranked contender Jessica Eye at UFC 238 on June 8th in Chicago, Illinois.
In addition to the championship bout, flyweight contenders Kaitlyn Chookagian and Joanne Calderwood will battle it out for the right to face the winner while the strawweight division will also receive a title eliminator as Nina Ansaroff and Tatiana Suarez face off.
Shevchenko (16-3) claimed the vacant 125 lbs championship at UFC 231 where she defeated Joanna Jedrzejczyk via unanimous decision. Shevchenko has only fought three times at the flyweight limit in her MMA career thus far but the Kyrgyzstani–Peruvian fighter has remained unbeaten in all three outings.
Eye (14-6, 1 NC) meanwhile has gone under a career resurgence since moving to the flyweight division in 2018. ‘Evil’ Eye has defeated Kalinda Faria, Jessica Rose-Clark and Kaitlyn Chookagian all via decision since the move down a weight class.
In UFC 238’s second flyweight bout, Kaitlyn Chookagian (11-2) will look to bounce back from her most recent loss to Eye which snapped a three-fight winning streak.
Facing off against Chookagian will be Joanne Calderwood (13-3) who has gone 3-0 in the UFC’s flyweight division. The Scottish fighter is currently on a two-fight winning streak since a return to 125 lbs defeating both Kalindra Faria and Ariane Lipski.
Elsewhere at UFC 238, Tatiana Suarez (7-0) will look to continue her unbeaten and dominant streak in the strawweight division against Nina Ansaroff (10-5). Both Suarez and Ansaroff are currently on a four-fight winning streak in the UFC defeating Carla Esparza and Claudia Gadelha in their most recent respective fights.
