After being away from the UFC for the best part of two years, Conor McGregor’s return to the Octagon certainly provided drama.
The Irishman was on the end of a fourth round submission against Khabib Nurmagomedov in Las Vegas, but ended up as the victim after a mass brawl was sparked by his Russian opponent.
Many are now left in the dark as to where that leaves both Nurmagomedov and McGregor, however, McGregor will now turn his thoughts to the future and a potential future fight.
Here are five options for Conor McGregor’s next opponent:
1) Khabib Nurmagomedov
The rematch has to take priority, providing what took place following the main event. If McGregor-Diaz got a rematch, you have to think McGregor-Nurmagomedov gets the same treatment. The only issue could be Nurmagomedov‘s role in the company following his actions. Could he be fired by the UFC? Only time will tell.
2) Nate Diaz
McGregor and Diaz are 1-1, with many calling the credentials of the most recent bout into question. A majority decision ruled in favour of the Irishman, and many expected the call had been made in order to set up McGregor-Diaz: The Decider™. Finishing the saga with Diaz wouldn’t be out of the question for McGregor.
3) Georges St-Pierre
The welterweight/middleweight is the third name in the Nurmagomedov-McGregor conversation, with the veteran boasting a strong 26-2 record, without having lost since 2007. An impressive win against Michael Bisping at middleweight last year has led to many trying to guess the Canadian’s next move – something we’re yet to see.
4) Anderson Silva
The 43-year-old hasn’t fought since February of 2017 in the UFC, but McGregor himself has professed interest in a fight with the former light-heavyweight. Whether or not the Brazilian would take the contest is another matter entirely, but the bout would certainly be one of the more unique match-ups the UFC had ever hosted.
5) Floyd Mayweather
Look, who knows. Could be boxing. Could be MMA. Could be chess. Who even knows? I know better than to try and predict what Conor McGregor might do next…
