With UFC 229 set to be headlined by the monumental Nurmagomedov – McGregor lightweight title fight, the UFC has moved quickly to provide a high-ranking heavyweight bout in the supporting act.

As reported by ESPN, the UFC’s #2 and #5 ranked heavyweights in Derrick Lewis and Alexander Volkov respectively will meet on October 6th in Las Vegas and are expected to take the co-main event berth.

Lewis (20-5) is regarded as one of the biggest hitters in the 265 lbs division and will head into UFC 229 coming off of a unanimous decision victory over Francis Ngannou – a fight widely panned for its inactivity. Lewis has successfully finished 18 of his 20 career wins inside the distance.

Volkov (30-6) meanwhile is currently on a six-fight win streak and has won all four of his UFC bouts since joining the promotion in 2016. The 6’7″ Russian fighter last fought in March of this year where he recorded a KO victory over former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum in the main event of UFC: London.
