UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has spoken of his desire for the UFC to organise a fight between himself and Conor McGregor.
Khabib claimed last month that the UFC was already working on a deal but UFC president Dana White has since played down any such claim, announcing that he has not yet held any talks with McGregor.
McGregor lost his lightweight crown through inactivity as he ventured into the world of boxing to fight Floyd Mayweather in a losing effort last year. The Irishman, however, hasn’t stepped foot in the Octagon since he defeated Eddie Alvarez in 2016.
With interim champion Tony Ferguson also stripped of his title in the meantime through injury, Nurmagomedov seized upon his own opportunity and claimed the undisputed title by beating Al Iaquinta in April.
Speaking on the Youtube series Anatomy of a Fighter, Khabib said of his situation:
If they want to make money, let’s go – Khabib versus Conor. Country versus country, fans versus fans. It’s going to be very big, one of the biggest.
I think the biggest matchup in UFC history, me versus Conor. Without [the] bus [incident], without other things; we just have to fight.
With Nurmagomedov eager for his first title defence, the undefeated fighter also suggested that either the winner of the upcoming Dustin Poirier – Eddie Alvarez bout or Tony Ferguson would be a deserving opponent:
If not Conor, if not GSP (Georges St. Pierre), I think Alvarez vs Poirier winner deserves [a] title shot.
About Tony Ferguson, I don’t know. He just [had] surgery. If he can, why not? Tony Ferguson is [the] biggest match up for me. This match [is] what I want, what people want, what fans want. I dont know about if he’s healthy, if you’re ready, lets go. I’m ready for September, I’m ready for October. I’m training all the time. I’m here to defend my title. If the UFC gave me any opponent, I’m ready.
The Russian is known as one of the most brutal and lethal UFC fighters and a matchup between him and McGregor is one that every UFC fan is desperate to see. McGregor still has an ongoing court case for his bus attack and is due to appear in court later this month.
