Less than three days since a reported bout agreement, Yair Rodriguez has been cut from the UFC by promotional president Dana White.
Rodriguez (10-2) had been expected to take on fellow ranked prospect Zabit Magomedsharipov at UFC 227 but after turning down the bout and one other, a fight with the #7 ranked Ricardo Lamas, Dana White has acted swiftly to remove the Mexican fighter from the promotion’s roster.
Confirming the news to the LA Times, White said of Rodriguez:
The guy’s off a year, rejects a fight with Lamas and then doesn’t want to fight a guy below him in the rankings? He can go somewhere else. We have no use for him.
He calls that fight fake news. This is real news.
Rodriguez had not fought in the UFC since May of last year when a fight with Frankie Edgar proved too much for the 25-year-old and the bout was stopped at the end of the second round via doctors stoppage.
‘El Pantera’ had been promoted heavily by the UFC due to a reported push into the Latin American market and main-evented two UFC Fight Night events prior to the Edgar loss at UFC 211.
With White sending a confirmation letter of Yair’s dismissal, the featherweight fighter will no doubt be a hotly contested free agent between Bellator, RIZIN and Combates Americas.
