After knocking out then #1 contender Luke Rockhold at UFC 221, Yoel Romero has confirmed his middleweight title rematch with Robert Whittaker has a date.
Revealing the news on ‘The Joe Rogan Experience Podcast‘, Romero will take on champion Robert Whittaker in Chicago, Illinois on June 9th. Romero and Whittaker first fought at UFC 213 in July of last year with Whittaker claiming the interim 185 lbs title before being promoted to full champion by the end of the year.
Whittaker (19-4) has yet to fight since his unanimous decision win over Romero and is currently unbeaten in his last eight bouts. The UFC’s first Oceanic champion moved up to the middleweight division in 2014 and has successfully finished four of his seven opponents at the 185 lbs weight limit.
Romero (13-2) meanwhile bounced back from his loss to Whittaker by stepping in on short notice to replace an injured Whittaker at UFC 221 and knocked out former champion Luke Rockhold in the third round. The Cuban fighter has finished seven of his 10 fights in the UFC with six of those finishes coming in the third round.
While the UFC has yet to officially confirm what would presumably be UFC 225’s main event, the PPV event is currently set to feature:
- Robert Whittaker vs. Yoel Romero
- Curtis Blaydes vs. Alistair Overeem
- Carla Esparza vs. Claudia Gadelha
- Joseph Benavidez vs. Sergio Pettis
- Rashad Evans vs. Anthony Smith
- Rashad Coulter vs. Allen Crowder
- CM Punk vs. TBA
