Dana White confirms Brian Ortega is next to challenge Max Holloway
In a matter of hours after becoming the first man to stop Frankie Edgar, the UFC have awarded Brian Ortega with a title shot.
Ortega (14-0, 1 NC) shocked the MMA world at UFC 222 on Saturday night with a brutal elbow and accompanying uppercut to defeat the former lightweight champion in the first round of their featherweight bout and many were quick to call for a title shot for the 27-year-old fighter.
With the biggest win of his career still fresh in the mind, UFC president Dana White has confirmed the prevailing sentiment surrounding Ortega by handing a 145 lbs title shot to ‘T-City’ in a phone call which was recorded and posted to social media.
With Max Holloway’s next challenger set, the Hawaiian featherweight champion acted quickly to support the decision and offered up UFC 226, the July 7th event set to be headlined by the champion vs champion bout between Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier, as a date.
