After a brief moment of unfamiliar territory for the UFC’s women’s featherweight champion, Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino restored normality against Yana Kunitskaya and provided a swift ending within the first round.
With the first punch of the fight, Cyborg seemingly stunned her game opponent but found herself on her back as a takedown was landed by Kunitskaya. After a scramble to regain her footing, the Russian challenger fleetingly took Cyborg’s back but lost her position against the fence.
From Kunitskaya’s failed attempt to grapple, however, Cyborg took over. With smart shot selection on the feet, the Brazilian champion dropped Kunitskaya and a flurry of ground and pound brought an end to the bout.
Elsewhere, the most shocking result of UFC 222 was reserved for the night’s co-main event. With a thudding elbow and an uppercut which knocked Frankie Edgar off his feet, Brian Ortega continued his remarkable rise in the featherweight division and became the first man to stop Frankie Edgar with a first-round knockout.
