Stipe Miocic vs Francis Ngannou heavyweight title fight slated for UFC 220
Less than a week after Francis Ngannou scored one of the most devastating knockouts in MMA history, the UFC have acted quickly to reward the Cameroon native with a heavyweight title shot.
With MMAJunkie the first to report the news, Stipe Miocic is set to defend his 265 lbs title against Ngannou in the main event of UFC 220 on January 20th. The Boston event is also set to feature Daniel Cormier defend his light heavyweight title against Volkan Oezdemir in a co-main event berth.
Miocic (17-2) is currently on a five-fight win streak dating back to 2015 and has finished his last four bouts via first-round knockout. Miocic successfully claimed UFC gold at the expense of Fabricio Werdum at UFC 198 before defeating both Alistair Overeem and Junior dos Santos in his two title defences and would break the promotion’s record for consecutive heavyweight title defences if he were to defeat Ngannou.
Ngannou (11-1) meanwhile has risen to superstardom in the UFC’s heavyweight division since making his promotional debut in 2015. Ngannou has brought an early end to each of his six UFC bouts and claimed the biggest win of his career this past weekend with a first-round knockout over Alistair Overeem.
