With Daniel Cormier restored as UFC light heavyweight champion, DC will look to defend his title once more against rising contender Volkan Oezdemir.

Officially confirmed by the UFC on Wednesday, Cormier will take on the hard-hitting Swiss fighter in Boston on January 20th despite an impending felony charge for Oezdemir.

‘No Time’ was arrested earlier this month for aggravated battery in Florida after allegedly knocking out a man during an altercation outside of a bar. The UFC are aware of the situation but Oezdemir’s legal team have said that the light heavyweight was not the aggressor.

Cormier (19-1, 1 NC) was most recently defeated by Jon Jones at UFC 214 via a third-round knockout but the result of the bout was overturned and ruled a no contest following Jones testing positive for a steroid in an in-competition drug test. Prior to the second Jones bout, Cormier had successfully defended his 205 lbs title twice defeating both Alexander Gustafsson and Anthony Johnson.

Oezdemir (15-1) meanwhile has gone 3-0 in his UFC tenure thus far with wins over Ovince Saint-Preux, Misha Cirkunov and Jimi Manuwa. ‘No Time’ successfully defeated the latter two fighters in a combined 70 seconds via knockout.
