After fans and pundits alike have begged for the match-up, the UFC has duly obliged.

Announced officially through the UFC’s Canada Twitter account, Robbie Lawler will take on Rafael dos Anjos in the main event of UFC: Winnipeg on December 16th.

With both fighters currently ranked in the UFC’s top five welterweights, the winner of the five-round fight will almost certainly be up next for the 170 lbs champion Tyron Woodley.

Lawler (28-11, 1 NC) recently returned to the Octagon at UFC 214 where he successfully defeated Donald Cerrone via unanimous decision. ‘Ruthless’ Robbie Lawler had taken time away from competition after losing his welterweight title to the current champion Tyron Woodley in 2016 but the 35-year-old veteran bounced back against Cerrone to go 6-1 in his last seven fights.

His scheduled opponent, Rafael dos Anjos (27-9), is also a former UFC champion but claimed gold in the lightweight division. Since moving up to the welterweight division in 2017 however, the Brazilian fighter has rattled off back-to-back victories over two ranked welterweights in Tarec Saffiedine and more recently Neil Magny.

The UFC on Fox 26 event is also currently scheduled to feature:

  • Glover Teixeira vs Misha Cirkunov
  • Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs Jared Cannonier
  • Tim Elliott vs Justin Scoggins
  • Oluwale Bamgbose vs Alessio Di Chirico
  • Vitor Miranda vs Julian Marquez
