With a flush head kick in the third round, Jon ‘Bones’ Jones recaptured his UFC light heavyweight championship and reaffirmed his position as the greatest fighter of all time.
After a tumultuous two years of on and off action inside of the Octagon, Jones’ return saw a reignition of his rivalry with Daniel Cormier and seemingly picked up where he had left off.
With Jones winning the first round through his excellent use of reach and a combination of his creative striking arsenal, the champion Daniel Cormier would then bounce back in the second stanza in a hard-fought rematch bout.
The third round, however, saw the challenger land a thumping head kick as Cormier leaned into the strike and quickly marked the beginning of the end.
Stumbling towards the cage, Jones smartly looked for a trip on Cormier before a knee to the body saw ‘DC’ completely lose what was left of his balance and allowed Jones the opportunity to rain down strikes on the 38-year-old forcing referee John McCarthy to bring an end to preceedings.
In the nights other title bouts, Tyron Woodley retained his welterweight belt in a safe performance against Demian Maia while Cris Cyborg finally got her hands on UFC gold with a third round TKO victory over Tonya Evinger.
In the co-main event, Woodley impressively shook off takedown after takedown attempt from his jiu-jitsu master opponent Maia, but slowly removed all urgency with regards to his striking over the 25-minute slog.
Cyborg meanwhile was taken to the third round for the first time in four years as a game Tonya Evinger kept her distance and picked her strikes smartly. The toll of heavy strikes proved too much for the Invicta bantamweight champion however as a barrage of knees and punches closed out the fight.
