With the UFC returning to Glasgow for the first time in two years, the fervent Scottish fans have been duly rewarded with one of Europe’s most popular fighters and the return of a hometown hero.

Announced via the UFC Europe Twitter account, Gunnar Nelson is set to headline the July 16th event against Sergio Ponzinibbio in a highly ranked welterweight clash while Glasgow’s own Joanne Calderwood will take on the promising Cynthia Calvillo.

Nelson (16-2-1) is currently on a two-fight win streak and most recently defeated Alan Jouban via rear-naked choke at UFC: London in March. The Icelandic welterweight has gone 7-2 during his time with the UFC and is currently ranked #9 in the promotion’s 170 lbs rankings.

Ponzinibbio (24-3) meanwhile has gone 4-0 since losing to Lorenz Larkin in 2013 with his last victory coming against Nordine Taleb in February. The 30-year-old Argentinian is currently ranked #13 and has won 13 of his bouts via KO.

In the second bout announcement for UFC: Glasgow, Joanne Calderwood (11-2) will take on Cynthia Calvillo off of the back of a submission loss to Jessica Andrade at UFC 203. Calderwood had gone on a two-fight win streak prior to her latest bout and is currently ranked #7 in the UFC’s strawweight division.

Calvillo (5-0) has stormed to prominence since signing with the UFC and has won both of her bouts with the promotion and doing so within the span of a five week period. The 29-year-old has won all but one of her fights via stoppage and is ranked #15 at 115lbs.
